Judge Slotting

To facilitate an on-time tournament, judges will be assigned events to judge before the start of the tournament.

Assigned Rounds

The rounds that each judge is assigned to judge will be highlighted on the schedule on the back of each judge's name tag. Please go to Ballot Push 30 minutes before your highlighted rounds to pick up your ballots.

During judge registration you will be able to give preferences for the events that you would like to judge. These preferences will be considered when making the judging assignments.

Community and alumni judges will be given priority. If there is not a ballot for you when you arrive at Ballot Push, please do not assume that you are not needed for future highlighted rounds.

You may be needed to judge a round that was not highlighted on your schedule due to unexpected circumstances. Parents, please hang out in the Family Lounge rooms, in case you need to be called on to judge an "un-highlighted round" due to unexpected circumstances.

*Parents, if you are not able to be available all day to judge due to a prior commitment, please email [email protected]. For the tournament to run smoothly, it is vital to be aware of a judge's availability.

Judge Slotting Criteria

To provide transparency, the following criteria will be used, if possible, when assigning judges. The goal is to provide the most unbiased judge assignments for each round and event.

*All Judges:
- Judges cannot judge competitors that they know well, are related to, or have coached.
- Judges cannot judge the same competitors more than once in a single event during the tournament.

Parent Judges:
- Parents should not judge their children's debate partners.
- Parents should not judge students that they are host housing or are being host housed.
- When possible, parents should not judge students that they have listened to or helped during club in the debate event.
- When possible, parents should not judge club members in a debate against another club. This may be hard to do as there are many F5 students this year.

Alumni Judges:
- Alumni judges should not judge past teammates, competitors, or anyone they have coached. Speechranks may be utilized to help identify past competitors and teammates. If possible, alumni will judge new competitors that were not competing at the same time as the alumni judge.

Notifying Tournament of Conflicts

When registering as a judge, please indicate any individual conflicts with close friends or family. If you are helping to coach a club or regularly help at club, please indicate that when registering as a judge by noting the club that you help coach under the Club Conflicts section of judge registration.

After registration closes, parents and alumni judges may receive an email asking for verification of any conflicts among the students that are registered for the tournament.

Exceptions

Sometimes to fill judging slots, concessions have to be made.

If possible, these criteria will be adhered to as strictly as possible.
